Harold C. Nachtrieb
September 7, 1929 - June 10, 2013

Your family misses you
The Nachtrieb family has lost its guiding spirit. Husband, father, lawyer, author and tuba player Harold Carothers Nachtrieb passed away on June 10 surrounded by his family.
He was a loving husband and a proud Dad. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ursula; his five children Sally, Anne, Edward, George and Peter and his seven grandchildren Alex, Zita, Max, Will, Katie, Evan and Quinn. They all share his passion for creativity, humor, and love for life.
Hal was a creator. He was a prolific playwright, composing countless theatrical works for the Bohemian Club and for his children's classrooms. He crafted poems to commemorate special occasions, composed lyrics for a CD collaboration with his daughter Anne and, as an attorney, wrote a closing argument of a big case in verse, winning his client a major award.
Hal was an entertainer. As a tuba player, Harold played with The Goodtime Washboard Three, bringing the bass to their nostalgic hits like Under the Dock in Sausalito, thrilling audiences from Vegas to the State Department. Donning Lederhosen, he never missed a chance to play with the Joe Smiell band, often at the Tourist Club on Mt. Tam, many Oktoberfests, and at Schroeder's Restaurant.
Harold was an adventurer. He loved sailing, SCUBA diving, hiking, and had a near fatal flirtation with hang-gliding. He was playful, a little mischievous, often had an eyebrow raised, a twinkle in his eye, smile on his face and sometimes even a finger in his cheek as he hypnotized children by simulating the popping of a bottle of champagne.
Hal was a Bay Area native. Born in Oakland in 1929, graduated Berkeley High in '47, Stanford '51 (proud member of the D.U. house), served as an officer on a destroyer in the Navy, and was in Boalt Hall Law School class of '58. He enjoyed his practice as a trial lawyer in San Francisco and Marin County. For over 50 years, Hal was a passionate member and enthusiastic contributor to the Bohemian Club.
As Hal would frequently say about any of his accomplishments, "It was really nothing."
